On May 6, 2009, Gwen was diagnosed with cervical cancer. The family spent the next few weeks in shock awaiting for more test results to tell the extent of the cancer. On May 19th Pete and Gwen met with the oncologist and were told that the cancer had spread out of the cervix into the tissue on the right side and therefore there was no point in doing surgery. The Oncologist told them she believed Gwen's surgery to be curable with intense aggressive treatment. In the same breath, however, the Oncologist also said the prognosis would depend on how the lymph nodes were affected. The extent of this is not yet known however, their are several lymph nodes that are enlarged.
The treatment plan put in front of Gwen and Pete was that radiation as well as chemotherapy would begin in 2 days with the duration being 6 weeks in length. After deciding to go ahead with this treatment they were dealt another blow the next day when told they would not be able to "get in" for treatment for at least another week. They are now awaiting news of when her treatments will begin.
Obviously the family's heads are spinning from the news of the past few weeks. This has forced Gwen to take a leave of absence from her job as an LPN at Bethesda Hospital. Pete is also cutting back with his long distance truck driving and once the treatments begin will probably stop driving altogether to take care of the family at home.
Please pray for the family as they are trying to come to terms with the news and prepare themselves for the next many months of treatments. Please continue to check this blog for updates and prayer requests. Please feel free to comment-any words of encouragement are welcome.

I love the fact that you have started this blogging page, so that we can keep up with your pains, and treatments and with what help you might need, so as to not bombard you with all these questions. Please remember that we, as part of the family of God and as your friends are here for you in this season. Please depend on us for what you might need. We will do whatever we possibly can to help you. Mostly, know that you are all in our prayers, and that I will walk in your honour in the Relay for Life this Friday night. Hope you are doing well, in spite of your circumstances. May the Lord grant you peace during this time.
